GASPING OVER THE TRUE PRICE OF

CREDIT CARDS

By Dr. Kevin Downing

Recently I had the privilege of speaking at the Men’s retreat for our church. We had a beautiful mountain setting with gorgeous views of the camp where we stayed.  I spoke with the guys about their finances and ran through some of the realities of using credit cards. I’ve talked about these things for so long that I guess I assumed that everyone knew these kinds of figures. When I shared with the men what I’m about to share with you there was a loud gasp that went through the group. Many of our men were completely unaware – and noticeably shocked by what I told them. Here is what I shared from my notes…

  1. If you have four credit cards averaging 17% interest with a combined outstanding balance of $5,200…
  2. And you pay only the minimum monthly payment …
  3. It will take you 40 years and 8 months to pay them off
  4. You will pay the $5,200 you borrowed PLUS $11,790 of interest!!!

Add on top of this that the $5,200 that was borrowed might have used to buy furniture or worse yet groceries, car repairs or party supplies. These things are long gone while you spend 40 years paying them off!

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.
I Corinthians 2:6

It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak
II Corinthians 4:13

On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.
I Thessalonians 2:4

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever - the Spirit of truth.
