As we come to the end of the XXIX Olympiad until another 4 years, I am reminded of so many inspiring moments. God has truly given talent to these people and they have worked hard and persevered for the prize! But as I watched a new “Mark Spitz” capture the All Around, World Athlete Crown, I had to wonder; is that the only prize he is reaching for? I don’t mean to diminish his achievement, but it does make one ponder.
Heb 12:1 says... “and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”
Are you running that race? Do you have the discipline to stay the course? Self-discipline is a key component to being successful. Having the discipline to do whatever you have to and make whatever sacrifices necessary to perform at your best during competition is what sets us apart from others. Yet, performing at our best most often, if not always, conjures up selfish intent. One of my favorite Olympic moments was when, in the heat of battle, Dara Torres, the oldest member of the woman’s swim team, asked the officials to delay the start of a race so that one of her competitors could change her torn swimsuit. I’m sure that made Jesus smile. We perform at our best when we serve others!
Did you know you’re in competition? It’s the one that we all battle each day of our life…spiritual warfare! We are in a battle and it continues to press in our daily lives. Satan is after us in so many ways - in our relationships, workplace, parenting, finances, and decision making. The first sign of this is our increasing selfishness. Satan wants us to forsake all others and think of self, God wants us to lose ourselves in serving others. It’s a tough tug-o-war, and to win we need others to help us pull the rope. That is why we do what we do here at Turning Point Ministry Group! We want to help pull the rope with you and your family. God does not want us to do this alone!
