The Feeling List and Emotional Intimacy In Marriage

By Dr. Kevin Downing

Imagine for a minute if you took all the feeling words out of the Book of Psalms. There would not be a whole lot left. It is the pouring out of King David’s soul, and in particular his FEELINGS that help us have a similar pouring out to our Maker. Its the vulnerability of honestly sharing the deepest of feelings that helps create a rich closeness to God.

As in our relationship with God, we are designed for emotional intimacy in marriage.

Below you will find a FEELING LIST. It is simply a list of feeling words. We use this list to help couples have “feeling check-ins”.

The exercise goes like this…take the FEELING LIST and share two words from the list that describe how you feel about anything that is currently going on in your life (besides your marriage). It could be about your job, your hobby, anything.

Next share two words from the FEELING LIST that describe how you feel about your marriage (please start with some positive words). Sharing feeling such as gratitude, your commitment to your mate and appreciation are great starters. When you share the feeling word from the list, say only one to two sentences as to why you feel the way you do. You can see how brief this exchange will be - four feeling words and four to eight sentences to explain. Your mate will do the same and in less than five minutes you have had a “feeling check-in”. Do this every day for a week and you will see your closeness improve.

You will also find below another feeling list. It is all the feelings that Jesus experienced as recorded in the New Testament. Notice the wide range of feelings He encountered and was able to share with those He loved.

If you would like more help, feel free to call us and make an appointment with one of our counselors.

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.
