Talking About the Tough Stuff With Your Mate
By Dr. Kevin Downing

It was over twenty years ago that I had my first job working at a Psychiatric Hospital. A young 16 year old gal came to the hospital after trying to kill herself through a drug overdose. I was assigned to be her counselor and we hit it off very well until her family came to visit. During our first family counseling session her mother, step-father and aunt all had nose bleeds. I thought this was so unusual and wondered how three adults could have this happening at the same time (I was so naïve!!!).  In short order I figured out that they were all cocaine addicts. (Snorting the cocaine up their noses causes the bleeding.) I remember so well confronting them about their drug use – and then one of them who said they wanted to tear my throat out.  Somehow graduate school had not prepared me for this moment! It’s no wonder people did not talk about drugs in this family - you just might get killed! I remember blundering through those first few sessions, but in no time at all I got really good at the skill of - confrontation.

How to overcome depression

By Laura Depp, M.S.
Forward by Frances J. Harvey, Office Manager

As the Office Manager and e-magazine Editor here at Turning Point Counseling, I talk to people every day that are seeking counseling for many different reasons.  Recently I have noticed a large increase in the number of inquires that are seeking help and want counseling for the areas of Depression, Anxiety and Stress.  There is no discrimination when it comes to these three issues.  It can affect anyone such as housewives, moms with new babies, corporate men and women, college students, teenagers, the elderly and even our youngest children!
