Eyes That See

I've heard about Jesus my whole life long.
I've heard of his greatness and truth.
I've heard of his power and might and strength,
And his love for the children, too.

I've heard about Jesus year after year
and sometimes I have come very near
To his presence, his love, his excellent grace,
But now I've seen Jesus shine through your face.
I was sick inside. I wasn't well.

But you looked in my eyes and you could tell.
You could see someone hurt, wounded within.
You wanted to help but not to force a way in.
You waited until I had time to come.
You cared about what I had become.

I cried and I wept and I showed you my pain,
Afraid that you'd never want to see it again.
Nobody else in my whole long life,
Ever wanted to see my pain.
Repulsive it was and they turned it away,
"Be happy and smile again."
Sometimes I would show it, a peep at a time,
To family, counselors, and friends.
"Tough it up," "Pray," "What's wrong with you?"
Was how the encounters would end.

But "Let's take a look," is what you would say.
My pain and my hurt gently slipped away.
You looked at me with eyes full of love,
Reflecting the eyes of my Father above.

I've heard about Jesus year after year
and sometimes I've come very near
to His presence, his love, his excellent grace,
But now I've seen Jesus shine through your face.
