AREAS OF SPECIAL FOCUS
Barbara enjoys working with couples, families, teens and single adults as they resolve relational and family of origin issues. Her background in church ministry and missions has equipped her to combine a strong Biblical background with more recent training and experience as a marriage and family therapist intern.
Her personal experience in areas of loss and pain, recovery, and recognizing God’s faithfulness in every situation has shaped her empathy for those who are struggling with life’s challenges. Her theme verse is Jeremiah 29:11 ”For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This is her guiding principle for the people she counsels as well.
Barbara’s focus is to help her clients identify their needs and goals to be achieved in therapy. She then helps them accomplish those goals using practical approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, while also taking time to delve into the underlying family and individual issues that are producing unhealthy and undesirable behaviors. Restoring broken relationships and developing healthy self-understanding and acceptance are two rewarding aspects of her work with individuals and families.
She uses a variety of methods, including Biblical principles, John Gottmans’s questionnaires and guidelines for working with couples, art therapy, role playing, and sensitive, active listening, both practicing and teaching it to her clients. Psycho education is offered when needed to help clients see their problems and understand their situations differently, in order to manage their emotions better and change their behaviors.

A SEASONED COUNSELOR
Barbara worked extensively with the Hispanic population of Ventura County as a bilingual therapist during her traineeship and first year of internship with a local agency. Her years of ministry in missions in South America and also in Southern California Hispanic Ministries have prepared her to work cross-culturally.
Prior to beginning her formal training in counseling, Barbara worked for several years with a Transitional Living Program in Ventura for families and individuals who were homeless, developing, training and overseeing the mentor program for the agency, as well as providing informal counseling for the residents. She has been a workshop leader at women’s retreats and often provided counsel to attendees following her presentations.
COMMITTED TO MINISTRY
Barbara has served in local churches, including 10 years on staff at a church in Ventura, preceding her years of missionary service. Currently she participates in and leads Bible study and fellowship small groups while pursuing her more recent ministry as a therapist. She also has been active in Celebrate Recovery as a co-dependency group leader and trainer.
A PROFESSIONAL SPEAKER
Barbara has presented interactive workshops in areas of financial management, conflict resolution, active listening, boundaries, codependency, and other relational issues. She is available to offer workshops to local church staffs and small groups as needed in these areas.
COMMITTED TO FAMILY
Spending time with her son, daughter and son-in-law, and her two teenage grandchildren is of primary importance. After many years of living out of the country, she is grateful to have them nearby and looks forward to being with them whenever possible. Her three siblings and their families are scattered across the country, but on those rare occasions that they are able to connect it is always a welcome opportunity.
